Yellowstone National Park boasts the richest abundance of natural wonders in the nation. With its wonderous geothermal features, rich wildlife, and over 2 million acres of unparalleled wilderness, Yellowstone National Park is one of the greatest assets of North America.
The park is situated primarily in Wyoming with small parts extending into Idaho and Montana. The national park features a mesmerizing amalgamation of lakes, rivers, mountains and canyons.
On 26th February 2014, Yellowstone National Park was listed as one of the seven wonders of North America. Here are a few features for you to discover and explore in the national park and experience what makes it one of the natural wonders of the world.
The Old Faithful geyser is one of the most popular attractions of the national park. Even though it is not the highest or hottest in the world, it is still one of the most attractive natural wonders in North America. It erupts every 45 to 90 minutes. The natural geyser blows up to a height of 90 feet in the air. In some cases, it even goes up to 130 feet. The eruption lasts for around 2-5 minutes.
The geyser has received its name as its eruptions are fairly regular. You can either stand or sit at the benches around the geyser for ultimate fun.
Limestone, minerals, water, and heat all combine to create the world-famous terraces of the park’s Mammoth Hot Springs. Here, beautifully colored travertine is dissolved due to limestone underneath the ground. The molten form is carried over the surface with the help of the rising springs of hot water.
While some terraces and springs die with time, the flow of water in Yellowstone National Park’s hot springs currently remains constant.
The tie-dye of nature, the Grand Prismatic Spring of Yellowstone is the largest hot water spring in the United States. It is the third largest hot water spring in the world. The spring is known for its intensity of varying colors -just like a rainbow. The colors are due to the presence of pigmented bacteria in multiple microbial mats. The bacteria grow around the edges of water that is rich in a wide number of minerals.
The amazing canyon is naturally formed by the Yellowstone River. It is 20 miles long and has a depth of around 1200 feet. It is one of the most popular and highly photographed features. The canyon is also famous for its Lower Falls. Here, the river is known to tumble around 308 feet. It is twice the height of the Niagara Falls. The river then strikes the canyon floor. It is achieved with such force that mist and foam rise hundreds of feet above.
Yellowstone National Park is home to a number of natural wonders for you to explore. Make the most of your time by doing some research in advance.
